The keyword-volume trap: why your content calendar is failing

May 10, 2026 · 1 min read

Open any keyword tool. Sort descending by volume. Schedule articles in that order. This is the default planning method in 90% of marketing teams, and it is broken.

Volume is a poor proxy for buyer intent

The highest-volume queries in any category are usually the most generic. They are searched by curious passers-by, students, journalists, and competitors — not by buyers in the moment of decision. Optimising for them produces traffic without conversion.

What to optimise for instead

Map content to the questions your sales team gets asked in the second and third meeting, not the first. Those are the questions buyers ask when they are ready to commit budget. They have lower volume — sometimes a tenth — but their conversion rate is often ten times higher.
